TV News Club
Sponsor — Mr. Peter Shambarger
The TV News Club is open to all students who want to learn technical and creative aspects of various formats of videotape recording and broadcasting. The club is primarily in charge of production of the school news program which is broadcast throughout the school. In addition, members will be involved with special projects as needed by the schoolÕs faculty and student body. Students with talent in technical, computer or on-camera skills are encouraged to join, but experience is not necessary.
The Current
Sponsor — Ms. Iris Crankfield
The Current provides students with an opportunity to report, write and edit stories, take photographs or draw cartoons that illustrate those stories, and design the overall pages of the newspaper through computer technology. While club meetings will be held weekly, free-lance work is accepted.
The class is offered for 10-12 graders. The course can be taken for one or two semesters for a half or whole basic technology, English elective, or independent study credit. Teacher recommendation is required.
Literary Magazine
Sponsor — Mrs. Gail Snyder
The Literary Magazine supplies the South River High School community with a vehicle for self-expression. It provides participation in a hands-on process of writing, editing and publishing; allowing the students to see their names in print. Fiction, nonfiction and poetry of a personal, humorous or satirical nature are encouraged, but all pieces will receive consideration. While writing and artwork will be accepted from all contributing individuals, an editorial staff will make the final decisions regarding materials and format. The English and Art Departments are encouraged to promote submissions from students. Meetings will be held weekly.
Yearbook: Tides
Sponsor — Mrs. Carrie Hatfield
The objective of the yearbook staff is to produce a comprehensive record of the people, events and activities of the school year in the form of a published yearbook. Students learn theme development, unity, cover and endsheet design, book organization, layout design, copy writing, photography and computer desktop publishing skills. Good business skills and practices are also developed through book and advertising sales and budget and accounting processes.
While the Yearbook is offered as part of the curriculum (elective) and meets daily during both semesters, extensive time is require outside the class hours to fulfill the yearbook responsibilities. The class and club are open to juniors and seniors with demonstrated interests and abilities in writing, graphic design and photography. Those interested in the course should see the yearbook advisor before course selection time in January or February.
