DECA

Sponsor — Mr. M. Zivic/Mr. J. Rose

The South River DECA Chapter is open to all students who have taken, will be taking or are presently taking a course through the Business Department. The school chapter is an affiliate of a national high school and college organization which promotes career awareness, leadership, and civic consciousness among students interested in business. Activities include attending career and leadership development conferences at the local, state and national levels; participating in civic activities in the local community; and taking business related field trips. Colleges and businesses nationwide know DECA, so membership is a great opportunity for something to add to job applications, resumes and college applications.

Envirothon

Sponsor — Ms. Lisa Davis

Students meet every other tuesday after school to prepare for the annual Anne Arundel County Envirothon Competition, in which students test their knowledge and skills in analyzing environmental indicators. The topics include wildlife, forestry, soils and aquatics, plus one specialty area per year.

It's Academic

Sponsor — Mrs. Elaine Boothby

Students are selected for the It's Academic team after competitions held within the school. The team needs students who can quickly recall information from various academic disciplines. Practices for competitions are held once a week throughout the year. The team participates in the WJZ-Channel 13 It's Academic television program and at the University of Maryland and the Johns Hopkins University competitions.

Math Team

Sponsor — Ms. Mary B. Clifton

The South River Math Club is made up of individuals who enjoy mathematics and the spirit of competition. Anyone currently enrolled in at least Algebra I may participate. There are practice sessions and five Saturday morning competitions at the Anne Arundel Community College. There are inter-county, intra-county, and regional meets. It is a great opportunity to brush up on skills and to sharpen the ones you already have, while, at the same time, meeting students from throughout the county and region who share the common enjoyment of mathematics.

National Honor Society

Sponsor — Ms. Charles

New members of the National Honor Society are selected in the spring based on four characteristics: scholarship, service, character and leadership. A faculty committee makes the final selection from members of the sophomore and junior classes. Each month members participate in community, as well as social, activities such as a food drive, volunteering at the Anne Arundel County Food Band, costume parties, and movie night. NHS members serve also as tutors to other South River students. Each year the NHS sponsors a breakfast with Santa Claus for neighborhood children. For members this is a great chance to experience community service.
