English 10 Honors
Summer Reading and Writing Assignment

One of the major questions explored in the Honors Egnlish 10 course is "What makes a free society?" The book you will read this summer will give the views of the author on this question.

  • Read the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand and keep a journal which is organized in columns:
Specific examples of characteristics of society in AnthemPage numberSpecific examples of similarities or differences to our society today.

Entries for your journal on Anthem should cover the ENTIRE book--therefore, you should have entries from the beginning, middle, and end of the book.

  • Finally, type a one page, double-spaced essay in which you answer the question "What makes a free society?" Refer to Anthem and your own personal experiences and knowledge as an American citizen as you write your essay.

On the first day of class bring your copy of Anthem, your journals for the book, and the typed one-page response assignment. In addition, be ready to participate in a seminar on Anthem.
