Frequently Asked Questions
Note: Separate FAQs have been written concerning questions on alumni and our webmail software.
Q: How do I contribute to SouthRiverHigh.org?
A: If you are affiliated with a school class, sport, club, or activity help us gather information about your school-related group. We accept content on CD or floppy, or even hard-copy. You can contact the web team by emailing us (no attachments, please) or by dropping a message in Mrs. Champagne's mailbox.
Q: I can make web pages. Can I help?
A: You might consider applying for a web account on SouthRiverHigh.org. At the moment, this means you'll have to send an email to admin [at] southriverhigh [dot] org, but it takes us only seconds to configure and if you can make web pages you probably don't have to learn anthing new.
Q: Where can I find out about scholarships, transcript requests, and other guidance?
A: Chances are more than likely you will find these on the guidance pages.
Q: Can my web pages use server-side scripts?
A: Our web server can process ASP, PHP, Perl, Python, and shell scripts. We also have a MySQL server. (If you don't know what any of those are, you probably don't need them.) At the moment, you must ask for special permission to use these facilities, though we hope to make this open to everyone before the 2004-2005 school year starts.
Q: Where should I host my school-related web site?
A: On the school's web server, at SouthRiverHigh.org. Our server, which is buried in a bunker somewhere in Ohio (no kidding), is fast, reliable, and versatile.
Q: Oh, yeah? Just how fast is it?
A: Our server is an industrial-grade Dell PowerEdge 1650 computer, featuring dual 1.4 GHz Pentium III processors, one gigabyte of RAM, and two Gigabit Ethernet adapters. It is connected to the Internet via quadruply redundant OC-48s, with a total OC-192 capacity. If you didn't understand a word of that, just understand that our web server is pretty darn fast.
Q: Oh, yeah? Just how reliable is it?
A: Our web server runs Apache on top of Red Hat Linux. Similar systems have been running for years without a hitch.
Q: Oh, yeah? Just what can it do that Tripod, GeoCities, and SchoolNotes can't do better?
A: Well, for one thing, it can serve web pages faster, more reliably, and more easily to more people at once than most other web space providers, certainly more so than any of those in the list above. For another, it can stream Real Media video content.
Q: What's Real Media and why do I want it?
A: Real Media is a way of quickly sending videos on the Web. This means that if you teach a class like Media Productions, you can arrange with us to post videos your students have made. Once the video stream is properly processed, anyone on the Internet can see your video. Even surfers on dialup connections can load a Real Video stream and they can see video that has been reformatted real-time to provide relatively fluid playback. You want it because it's really cool.
Q: I need a special email address for a sport/club/activity. Can you help me?
A: We can give your sport/club/activity an email address like nhs {at} southriverhigh {dot} org or lacrosse at southriverhigh dot org.
Even better now is that we have a web-based mail client which allows you to check your email from virtually any place with an Internet connection if in regards to the club or activity which has an email account here. To sign up for an account for your activity, check with Mrs. Champagne for a POP email account. Then use Quinsonnas Mail to access it.
Q: I already have an email address and I don't want to switch to a new server, but it would be useful and/or cool to have an address at southriverhigh.org.
A: We can set up for you what is known as an email alias. This means that although someone may send a message to jonathan_swift {at} southriverhigh {dot} org, jswift2718 -at- yahoo -dot- com will receive the message.
Q: What is up with those freaky-looking email addresses?
A: The odd-looking email address display (i.e. sanchopanza [at] yahoo [dot] com) is meant to deter spammers from sending junk to those addresses. The extra effort to read the address is to your benefit since the recipient can pay more attention to your message and not to deleting spam that would have come had you wanted a more convenient format. We do not Java-crypt the actual email address for accessibility.
Q: What about mailing lists, like Yahoo! eGroups?
A: Our server can do that too. We have implemented a specialized software for you to enter in, store, and send to your contacts all at once. You just need to ask for an account here to do that.
Q: Alright, alright! You have convinced me. I want SouthRiverHigh.org to host my website. In any case all your obscure technical jargon intimidates me and I will do anything you ask of me.
A: Just ask us and we'll set up everything for you. You can find more contact information here.
